Thursday, Nov. 13th

Sorry I'm not here with you, but you have an important task to complete. Today we need to pause and think about jobs.  You'll be starting your new job after Thanksgiving.

Here's what you'll do TODAY:

  • On your computer, open up a new file in Microsoft Word.  Write your name, period 5 and today's date.
  • Title the file "Job Application and Description".
  • You will write 2 short Paragraphs and number them "1" and "2".
  • For Paragraph 1:  Tell me what new job you are applying for in Rotation 2.  Then, in 2 or 3 sentences, tell me why you want that job and what makes you qualified to do that job.
  • For Paragraph 2:  Create a detailed description of your Current Rotation Job (what you're doing right now on the show), with a 2- to 3- sentence summary of the Job itself.  Include bullet points describing specific, daily responsibilities, like this:
    • Turn on lights
    • Make sandwiches
    • Sweep floor
    • Comb hair
  • Make sure you put them in the same order that you perform them on a daily basis.  Include all job duties from the start of the daily recording session until the end of recording.

SAVE your file to your Desktop.  Name it: JobAppName (your name, silly!).
EMAIL it to me as an attachment, to:    thomas_d@aps.edu
DO NOT SUBMIT A PRINTED COPY!!!!  Email ONLY!!!

This is due before you leave today.

When you're finished, meet with your team about scheduled activities, interviews, shooting and upcoming deadlines.  Decide who is editing your story, and download footage to their computer in iMovie.

Portfolio Due Today

Follow directions on the Final Portfolio Guidelines file (on the right-side nav bar, if you haven't downloaded it yet).
**We're headed to the bookroom at 8:45, and won't be back, so you'd better hurry.

Put your Final Portfolio folder in the TV Broadcasting Spring Portfolio folder on the hard drive:

Monday, May 5, 2014

Monday, May 5th

Good morning.

SENIORS:  You'll take the Final Exam today.  The Sub has them in a folder.  Follow directions.  ***Armando, skip the part at the end with the newspaper article.
I still need Portfolios from Kevin, Lisa, Mayra and Armando.  Put them on the hard drive or send me a link ASAP...

Everyone Else:
You will do 2 things today.  I suggest starting with #1, because it will take some time.
  1. Watch the Edpuzzle tutorial on how to download videos from our shared Google Drive.  I put several example broadcasts on our Google drive for you to choose from.  You'll put one in your portfolio.  Go To EdPuzzle.com
  2. Once you've watched the tutorial, follow the steps in the tutorial to access our shared Google Drive.  Download at least 1 of the example broadcasts.
(If this is too complicated for you, retrieve the black hard drive from the counter.  Copies of the videos are on the hard drive.  Drag a copy of the video onto your desktop, and return the hard drive for someone else to use.)

     3.  Complete your 1 page Script in the Celtx software, print, and turn in to the black basket on my desk.  The Script is DUE TODAY!

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

Friday, April 24th: Starting your Final Portfolio

Download the instructions below, and open them on your Desktop.  Start by completing PART A today.  You should use Word or Celtx to type your responses, and save the file to your Desktop.

(Seniors, you've already begun this process; Scripts should be finished. Start collecting projects.)

Want to see examples of Portfolios from Previous Students??
They're on a Playlist on my YouTube Channel!

Nearing the End....

Hard to believe it, but we've got only 21 days of school left!  And Seniors...only 9!

Seniors need to put together a Final Portfolio of their work, including any Special Reports, Commercials, etc., along with at least 3 minutes of a News Broadcast that you worked on.

Underclassmen, we'll use next week's "C" Day schedule to begin prepping for your final News Report....on YOU!

Monday, April 7, 2014

Monday, April 7th

Today you'll start your Job Rotation "C" position!  It will take a little extra time, patience and coaching.  I'm asking Seniors to support the crew this morning as they get started, and then we'll meet to review music selections for the Senior Video and choose editing tasks.

When we return to the lab, I'll continue to collect:
  • Teacher Appreciation videos
  • Cyberbullying Project
  • Special Olympics
  • ???MEMS?
  • Premiere Commercial (AHAHS Version)

Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Wed. April 2nd-Fri. April 4th

After we record on Wednesday morning, we'll go through a "mock" session in your new job position.  Keep your notes with you, and add information as you learn.  You'll submit that before we leave for the day.

On Friday, I will collect the Cyberbullying project, the Premiere School of Driving Commercial, and all remaining Teacher Appreciation Videos.  These assignments are worth 15 points each, and will factor in your level of engagement and participation.
Everyone who is finished with their project will "rehearse" in their new job position on Friday.

Next Monday you will be working your new Job Assignment as we record.

If you choose NOT to record, you should at least prepare TWO guiding questions to get your subjects talking.  That way it's not so awkward.
Remember, your 3 videos, up to 60 seconds long (max), are due one week from today.  THAT MEANS THEY HAVE TO BE DONE ALREADY when you get here on March 14th!!

WEd. Mar. 5th

Answer the following for your "ticket" out the door to the Studio:

  1. What is a Package?
  2. List 3 things that a Package might contain.

Don't forget that on Friday you'll complete your EdPuzzle assignments; you can also work on the "Thank a Teacher" project or the "Premier School of Driving" Commercial.  I'll have resources available for you.

Finally, we'll head into the studio to record today's show.

And get this....they wanna pay us.  (***Squeeeeeeealllll!***)

I am looking for volunteers who want to work on this for extra credit and a nice sumpin' sumpin' to put on your resume.  I'm not sure what kind of time is involved; of course, with good planning, it won't take long at all....

I Think We Should Do This

Click on this link right now and watch the Jack Black video on the home page:

http://www.thankamillionteachers.com/

Check this out....if Jack Black can take the time to thank a teacher, why don't we?

I mean, imagine how simple this could be.....Create a small set, point the camera and record.  We could invite teachers in, or go visit them, or use their picture....could be your Elementary School teacher, Middle School, Geometry, Drama...whatever.

It's a really, really tough time for teachers right now, and every bit of gratitude and encouragement will help them remember why they do what they do.

This is an example of the power of our medium--television--to communicate and connect with our audience.  Why not use that power to put something good out into the world?

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

Wed., Feb. 19th

Today, as we set up to record the show, take time to interact with the person whose job you'll be taking over in Job Rotation C.  Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to interact with them on Friday; they'll be training you on responsibilities, duties and technical requirements.  For today, simply observe their workflow and ask questions when appropriate.

**If, for some reason, you did not submit your "Hire Me" letter of interest on Friday, you MUST do so before we go to the studio today.  See last week's post for full info.

When we return from the studio today, you'll research your new job online.
Try these links to get started, or simply search using your new Job Title.

TV Production Job Descriptions

TV Jobs (Organized by Category)

The information you find in your research will be used to complete Friday's graded assignment, so BOOKMARK the sites that you find helpful.  **Not sure how to bookmark a website?  Ask Ms. Thomas or your neighbor!**  (Command + D Keys)

YOU, on the other hand, could show up for something really meaningful, that can help make a difference in your peers' lives.

Borrow a camera, document the event, do interviews----I'll give you extra credit that replaces any missing grades.  The usual Production Rubric would apply.

Pick up a copy of the handout from the Substitute.  Write your name at the top.
You will complete info on 10 famous African Americans by doing research on the internet.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!  Note that you CANNOT have the same answers as anyone else sitting in your row!

Assignment #2: Complete a Story Outline for your Package.
When you have completed Assignment #1 and handed it in to the black basket on my desk, join the other members of your News Package Team (don't disturb them if they are still working on #1; wait patiently or help them).  One member of the team should open a file in Microsoft Word, and the Team will work together to answer the following:

  1. What is the topic of your News Package?
  2. You must focus on one aspect, or perspective, on this topic.  What part of the story will you cover?
  3. What does the audience need to know about this topic?  (You should have one to two complete, detailed sentences describing exactly what information you will share with them.)
  4.  Who are the key people involved in, or affected by, this topic?  BE SPECIFIC.
  5. When will you begin collecting research on this topic?
  6. Why is it important to share this story with your audience?
  7. How will each team member contribute to the story?  LIST NAMES and the JOB they'll do.
When you have completed the answers, type the NAMES of all team members, and print the document (to the ".178" printer).  SAVE the document on your desktop.  Turn the printout in to the black basket on my desk.

Grab a Bite!

Everyone's earning Production Points in different ways today.
  • Package Team #1:  Editing, collecting still images, starting a script outline for your piece.  Next week is your last to edit and complete the package.
  • Interviews:  Jorge, prepare questions for all of your upcoming guests and vet those with me before printing.
  • Max:  Edit your transcript segment with Lisa's help.
  • Kevin, Janesa, Edwin, Armando:  copy the additional audio files to your desktop, choose one, and pull a good "sound bite" from the file.  Note the time code, and detail the topic of the quote.
  • Everyone else:  I have copied an audio file to your desktop.  It's an interview with Dean Leh about his "Earth Guardians"  group.  Open the file in iTunes, grab headphones, and listen to the interview to answer the following in writing:
    • You are listening for at least 3 "sound bites"--- statements about the Earth Guardians group, around 6 to 10 seconds in length, that we can edit into a short commercial about this group that we can run on the news.
    • When you find a "sound bite", pause the file, write down the time code, and then translate the "sound bite" word for word in writing.
    • For each "sound bite", note what the statement addresses---what the group is about, how to join, what they do, etc.
    • Turn your work in by 8 a.m.

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Wed., Jan. 29th

Today, we'll need to get recording done very quickly, so that we can play back the show and check for technical difficulties.  I need everyone on their "A" Game.
When we're done with that, we'll finish grading the reading from last week.  If time allows, you may meet with your Package Team to strategize.  Of course, Pkg. Team #1 will be doing other things this morning.

Get Volunteer Crew Experience!

You now how I'm always saying you should volunteer for stuff, to get experience and meet local film and television media makers?  How about THIS:

New Mexico Women in Film is getting ready to shoot their annual donated PSA and are looking for volunteer crew members to assist in making this commercial.

This year they are making the PSA for NM DOG, an organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare in New Mexico. They work closely with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's department to remove dogs from neglectful, chaining situations.  http://www.nmdog.org

The PSA is going to be shot on location and simulate a 'swat rescue' of a chained dog. They are  looking into getting a 15' crane donated and would like to use at least two cameras. As this is a somewhat ambitious project they would like to get as many film professionals willing to donate their time as possible.

The target date for shooting is Sunday, February 9th.  Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Ayn  Kirby ayn01@gmail.com  or 505.217.8491.
