Friday, Feb. 7th: Research Assigment

2 Assignments to complete today!

Okay, so you won't need your books for today's assignments.  But you will need to focus in order to complete this assignment with enough time to meet with your Package Team.
(Note:  Package Team #1 (Oscar & Josh) will be completing their edit; Max and Jorge will also be editing.  Those 4 people are exempt from this assignment.  EVERYONE ELSE must complete it.)

Thurgood Marshall
First African American Supreme Court Justice

Assignment #1:  Research Famous African Americans for Black History Month.
Pick up a copy of the handout from the Substitute.  Write your name at the top.
You will complete info on 10 famous African Americans by doing research on the internet.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!  Note that you CANNOT have the same answers as anyone else sitting in your row!

Here are some GREAT websites to get you started:

100 Famous African Americans of the 20th Century

Biographies of Famous African Americans

Great African American Biographies

Black History

Encyclopedia Brittanica's Guide to Black History

Assignment #2: Complete a Story Outline for your Package.
When you have completed Assignment #1 and handed it in to the black basket on my desk, join the other members of your News Package Team (don't disturb them if they are still working on #1; wait patiently or help them).  One member of the team should open a file in Microsoft Word, and the Team will work together to answer the following:

  1. What is the topic of your News Package?
  2. You must focus on one aspect, or perspective, on this topic.  What part of the story will you cover?
  3. What does the audience need to know about this topic?  (You should have one to two complete, detailed sentences describing exactly what information you will share with them.)
  4.  Who are the key people involved in, or affected by, this topic?  BE SPECIFIC.
  5. When will you begin collecting research on this topic?
  6. Why is it important to share this story with your audience?
  7. How will each team member contribute to the story?  LIST NAMES and the JOB they'll do.
When you have completed the answers, type the NAMES of all team members, and print the document (to the ".178" printer).  SAVE the document on your desktop.  Turn the printout in to the black basket on my desk.
