We'll return in time for you to go to 7th period.

Things

  1. I need volunteers for the "Thank a Teacher" and Premiere School of Driving Commercial.  Please let me know if you're interested in either before we leave today.
  2. We need to finish quickly today so I can train you on EdPuzzle in the lab.

Mon. Feb. 24th

Today we begin Job Rotation C!  Take your time, ask questions, look to your predecessor for help.  If you're not sure what to do, ask!

Package Team B has an interview scheduled this morning.  Put together your equipment and review interview questions with me.  The rest of the team will stay behind to begin collecting statistics, cover footage and still photos.  I expect you to show me evidence of your progress by 9 a.m.

This Rotation, we have 2 Interview Coordinators--Mayra Rodriguez and Armando Orona.  They will be using a Google Calendar and a paper calendar to coordinate with me, each other, and our News Director (Kevin Rodriguez).

Be sure to review the last few days' worth of blog posts, especially if you've been absent.

6 week grades go in tonight.

We got a JOB!

Oh. My. Gosh.

Word of your fabulousness is spreading in our community!  We've got our very first FOR REALZ, legit

COMMERCIAL!!!

Premier School of Driving has contacted us and requested that we create a 30-second commercial about their Driving School, that we can air on our broadcast.

And get this....they wanna pay us.  (***Squeeeeeeealllll!***)

I am looking for volunteers who want to work on this for extra credit and a nice sumpin' sumpin' to put on your resume.  I'm not sure what kind of time is involved; of course, with good planning, it won't take long at all....

Fri. Feb. 21st: Job Swap Research

Okay, today you must complete a little research on your new job, share that research with the person you are replacing, take notes from that person, get their signature of approval, and turn in your work.

Get out a blank sheet of paper.  Your name, period 1, and your NEW JOB go at the top.

Complete the following on your sheet of paper.  Carefully check your work when done.

Assignment #1: (5 points)
Use the links on the blog to find out information about the NEW JOB you start next week.  Complete all required information in complete sentences!
1.     Title of YOUR NEW JOB (listed on the front board):
2.     List one responsibility of this new job:
3.     List a second responsibility of this new job:
4.     What materials or equipment do you need to do this job:
5.     What personal or professional skills do you need to do this job:

Assignment #2: (5 points)

I Think We Should Do This

Click on this link right now and watch the Jack Black video on the home page:

http://www.thankamillionteachers.com/

Check this out....if Jack Black can take the time to thank a teacher, why don't we?

I mean, imagine how simple this could be.....Create a small set, point the camera and record.  We could invite teachers in, or go visit them, or use their picture....could be your Elementary School teacher, Middle School, Geometry, Drama...whatever.

It's a really, really tough time for teachers right now, and every bit of gratitude and encouragement will help them remember why they do what they do.

This is an example of the power of our medium--television--to communicate and connect with our audience.  Why not use that power to put something good out into the world?

Wed., Feb. 19th

Today, as we set up to record the show, take time to interact with the person whose job you'll be taking over in Job Rotation C.  Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to interact with them on Friday; they'll be training you on responsibilities, duties and technical requirements.  For today, simply observe their workflow and ask questions when appropriate.

**If, for some reason, you did not submit your "Hire Me" letter of interest on Friday, you MUST do so before we go to the studio today.  See last week's post for full info.

When we return from the studio today, you'll research your new job online.
Try these links to get started, or simply search using your new Job Title.

TV Production Job Descriptions
Careers in Television
TV Jobs (Organized by Category)

The information you find in your research will be used to complete Friday's graded assignment, so BOOKMARK the sites that you find helpful.  **Not sure how to bookmark a website?  Ask Ms. Thomas or your neighbor!**  (Command + D Keys)

Get A Job

Next week we'll start training for Rotation C.  It's time to apply for your next Job on the crew.

Write me an email ( thomas_d@aps.edu ) outlining the following:
  • Your name, previous work experience on the team, and the Job you're applying for.
  • Why you are applying for this particular position.
  • Your unique skills that make you a good candidate for the Job.
  • What you hope to learn and/or accomplish in this new Job.
Sign your name at the bottom--- a "digital" signature includes something like this:

Sincerely,
Johnny Student

Take time to ensure that the email actually goes through before logging out of your email account.

Then, meet with your Package News Team.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Do something that means something.

Next Tuesday, I'll be stuck at an all-day teacher training.  YUCK.
YOU, on the other hand, could show up for something really meaningful, that can help make a difference in your peers' lives.

Borrow a camera, document the event, do interviews----I'll give you extra credit that replaces any missing grades.  The usual Production Rubric would apply.

2 Assignments to complete today!

Okay, so you won't need your books for today's assignments.  But you will need to focus in order to complete this assignment with enough time to meet with your Package Team.

Assignment #1:  Research Famous African Americans for Black History Month.
Pick up a copy of the handout from the Substitute.  Write your name at the top.
You will complete info on 10 famous African Americans by doing research on the internet.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY!  Note that you CANNOT have the same answers as anyone else sitting in your row!

Here are some GREAT websites to get you started:

100 Famous African Americans of the 20th Century

Biographies of Famous African Americans

Great African American Biographies

Assignment #2: Complete a Story Outline for your Package.
When you have completed Assignment #1 and handed it in to the black basket on my desk, join the other members of your News Package Team (don't disturb them if they are still working on #1; wait patiently or help them).  One member of the team should open a file in Microsoft Word, and the Team will work together to answer the following:

  1. What is the topic of your News Package?
  2. You must focus on one aspect, or perspective, on this topic.  What part of the story will you cover?
  3. What does the audience need to know about this topic?  (You should have one to two complete, detailed sentences describing exactly what information you will share with them.)
  4.  Who are the key people involved in, or affected by, this topic?  BE SPECIFIC.
  5. When will you begin collecting research on this topic?
  6. Why is it important to share this story with your audience?
  7. How will each team member contribute to the story?  LIST NAMES and the JOB they'll do.
When you have completed the answers, type the NAMES of all team members, and print the document (to the ".178" printer).  SAVE the document on your desktop.  Turn the printout in to the black basket on my desk.
